Can You Buy a Star from Nasa?
66Fact or Fiction
Contrary to popular opinion, NASA does not sell stars. Considering the number of people who think they do sell stars, they could likely make a small fortune if they ever decided to create an "official" star registry service but I'm guessing they have more important things to do.
So, if you do want to buy a star, where do you turn? Fortunately, the web is littered with star registry services so you can pretty much take your pick. Just Google "buy a star" and you will see pages and pages of businesses you can purchase a star from.
But, can you really "purchase" a star? If you visit any of the star registry websites and do some research, you'll find that these businesses are not really selling stars, but simply selling you the naming rights to a star from their individual service.
Even though you don't really own the star, registering one for a friend or loved one is still a fun, novel idea that they will probably appreciate. It's a gesture that lets them know you've put some thought into their special occasion.
I recently purchased a star for a friend and they got a real kick out of it. The company I registered the star with sent a beautiful certificate that included the name of the star, the dedication date and the exact coordinates of the star. It was well done and was very reasonable price wise. I paid $19.95. It also included a short guide about the solar system that was really interesting if you or the star recipient is into astronomy.
So, to recap. No, you cannot buy a star from Nasa. The reality is that you can't really "buy" a star at all. You can, however, register a star and make somebody very happy with a unique gift that shows you really care about them.
